THS Charitable Support

THS and its staff take pride in its contributions of time, services and money to many sports and charitable organizations around the country. Here's how we give back to the community:

Sports Scholarships

This year, THS will donate over $100,000 to 12 different non-profit sports organizations. These scholarships are designed to help less-privileged kids participate in various sports in their communities. The scholarship money is given to each organization unencumbered so their Boards of Directors can distribute the funds as they see fit

Working With Our Hands

For the last two years, THS has sent staff members on the RISE Program trip to western New York state. RISE, an offshoot of the more well-known Appalachian Service Project (ASP), sends volunteer workers to poorer areas of New York state to assist in rebuilding homes. This past summer, Evan Levitt and Sharon Pene, along with two other staff went on one of the RISE week long trips. They worked hard each day, doing all varieties of manual renovation and building work they never thought they could do. When they returned, Evan and Sharon said that the trip was the most amazing experience they had ever had. Both are returning for the trip in 2012 along with two staff members new to the program. We still keep in touch with the family Evan and Sharon worked with last summer, offering regular help throughout the year as well as gifts for them all for Christmas.

Getaway Weekends

THS regularly donates "Getaway Weekend" certificates to numerous organizations, entitling the holder to a complimentary 3-Day/2 Night stay at a luxury hotel in one of a choice of cities. The organizations to which we donate these will auction them off or give them away as door prizes or raffle drawings as part of their fundraisers. Some of the 75 Getaway Weekends THS donate go to organizations like the Appalachian Service Project (ASP), RISE, DARE, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, New Jersey Foundation for the Blind, NORWESCAP, and various other local, state and national sports and charitable organizations.

Up With Kids

Every Christmas, the THS staff adopts kids from less fortunate families in the Northern New Jersey area. This last Christmas we adopted 7 families, through the United Way of Hunterdon County, NJ. We hope that everyone and every organization that is able, will seek out a child that needs their Christmas brightened.

National Donations

How do we turn Attrition Charges (lemons in our business) into lemonade? Easy. We donate them to charity. THS signs contracts for hundreds of thousands of room nights per year at hotels across the U.S. One of the biggest problems we encounter are teams/clubs that book rooms at a hotel, hold the rooms for months and months, then release all or most of them at the last minute, when it is too late for other teams/clubs to utilize them. To curb this, we have had to institute attrition clauses in our team/club contracts, simply to motivate the contacts to better estimate the number of rooms they actually need. Though the terms are stated clearly, and the contacts need to agree and accept the contract terms, some teams/clubs end up getting charged the attrition penalties. Since this policy is meant to keep rooms available to the teams that will use them, and not be a money-maker for THS, we donate the proceeds, split evenly, to the following national charities:

National Multiple Sclerosis Society - In honor of a long-time friend of THS, Gerry MacDonald, who suffers from MS. Gerry is a former hotelier who worked for various hotels companies, including the Residence Inn Company. Gerry also worked in a sales capacity in THS's early years, even as he battled the disease. Gerry resides with his family, wife Anita, son John and daughter Alyssa in central Michigan.
National Association of the Blind - In honor of a former long-time employee of THS, Nicole Pettit, who lost most of her eyesight several years ago from a medical condition. Having worked for THS for five years starting in the year 2000, Nicole left an imprint of quality and stability with THS. Nicole lives with her husband in northwest New Jersey.
Alzheimer's Foundation of America - In honor of Tom's father, Sam Berkman, who is battling the effects of Early Stage Alzheimer's Disease. Sam was a long-time employee of Western Electric and later AT&T, and has traveled to all fifty states and thirty different countries around the world in his work career. Sam is 80 years old, and last year celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary with his wife Jackie. They reside in Sun Lakes, AZ.
